A History of the 714th Tank Battalion, 1942-45 The men of the 714th Tank Battalion served their nation in its most prominent period of scarcity. There is a bench The rhythm sets in. It’s a steady rhythm. Roll out of bed at ten in the morning. Quickly assemble breakfast. Head to lecture. Cook lunch, or buy lunch, and work on my problem set in the lounge at our floor. Head to more lectures, or recitations. Then a student group gives an information session; then later, another student group hosts an event; and later, yet another student group has a meeting. There are free dinners in each one of these events. Or I’m going to one of my discovery classes in the evenings. Or I’m square dancing. (This is my PE class.) Or I’m eating dinner out with friends. Or I’m playing board games with people, or hanging out in the lounge, or working on a pset, or walking to Hayden to get something printed, or having a late night conversation with someone in Killian Court. That was my rhythm on Wednesday. Then Thursday. Friday. Saturday rolled in: I joined a LARP, watched a play, played some board games. Sunday: I went shopping, participated in a hall meeting, walked to Next House, talked to some friends. Then the rhythm, on Monday. Then Tuesday. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Who knows, maybe I’d see some of my friends? And I’m right: I see a friend from Harvard who was attending Hack. He’s lining up for lunch with the rest of his team. And we talk, for a bit. But he is soon swept up by the line growing behind him, and then I don’t see him any more. I head into the Stud to grab some lunch. A friend, an upperclassman, is there. I tell him that I don’t have anything to do, that all of my friends are busy. “There’ll only be more of that as the semester continues,” he says. So. I take a walk. I go down Mass Ave and cross the Harvard Bridge. Today, there are people sailing on the river. Cross on the left side, because it’s the left side that has the ramp. (The left side, when you’re coming from MIT. The same side as the dome. You’ll be facing the traffic.) Walking down this ramp leads to the Charles River Esplanade. Then turn left. Walk a little bit and there are two small playgrounds, with plastic slides and black circular benches that hug the trees. Walk a little more and there’s a small park, with stone walkways and some sort of monument. By the river, there’s this floating, wooden platform. There are several people sitting on the platform, this afternoon. There often are. If you sit on this platform and look straight ahead, you’ll be staring right at the Green Building. (The tallest building on campus, that pillar rising up from the sea of trees. For my FPOP, we had an activity on top of the Green Building. It was pretty fun.) I lie down and look at the sky, and it is gray. All around me, it’s this blue gray color, this bright light filling all the edges of my vision. If you look around, it’s like looking at this ring of city surrounding this blue gray sky lake. (The thought comes to mind: gravity is the only thing tethering us to this world, the only thing preventing us from falling into this lake. Where have I heard that thought before? I think it’s scrawled in marker on one of the pillars in 41 West, in one of the lounges I spent a lot of time in my first two weeks doing work in.) If you walk a little more, you’ll see a small bridge. It leads to a small patch of land. On top of the bridge you get to see a part of the river flowing in between these two patches of land, and it’s pretty, but it’s not what I came here for. On this patch of land, there are several benches. The leftmost one is my favorite. I sit down on the bench and stare at the campus. I’m reminded of what my friend told me a couple days ago. “We’re surrounded by the city, but isolated from it.” There was the campus. Right in front of me. But two thousand feet away. (Or, three hundred and sixty-five smoots away. I remember the first time I heard about smoots, two or three years ago; the story of measuring a bridge with one’s height. The plus or minus one ear, that joke on measurement uncertainty; through one way or another, it says something about MIT if the people there deem it funny enough to immortalize on a plaque. [Perhaps this realization I picked up through osmosis as well.]) On the bench there is a plaque with two names. I don’t remember their names, but the plaque commemorates their fiftieth anniversary. (It brings to mind a thought of a life beyond MIT, that after these four years I have hopefully fifty more years of life lined up in front of me, and hopefully many moreâ€"that many of the feelings I have right now are going to be mere pencil marks in the painting being built out of my lifeâ€" [The bubbling realization that everything that’s happened to me in the past few weeks, that a huge portion of my life for the next four years, will happen in that small space in front of me, the handful of square meters that is the MIT campus. It’s just a possibility, but,) but have you considered that maybe this isn’t the only time of your life that you can explore? That maybe, there is life after college, hopefully fifty years and hopefully many more,] but have you considered that maybe you’re overthinking all of this? That you’re just a first-year, or, you’re on P/NR, or, you’ve only been here for a month, or, you’re worrying too much, orâ€" [but have  I  consideredâ€"] rain starts falling, five minutes after I sat down. Huck didnt mind learning new things and being knowledgeable, but he did not like to get dressed up, to have to go to school, to be well behaved and polite, and to learn good manners. (p. 95) His spirit is free and uncorrupted by the prejudices of society. By listening to his heart, Huck makes a good choice. He still takes responsibility for his own actions although not according to the standards put on him, but by those he puts on himself. He is no longer as selfish, as he becomes more mature he learns to respect other peoples feelings and needs. Even though he doesnt want to live in their world, Huck still has feelings for the people he meets and cares for. Traveling down the Mississippi is heaven for a free spirit like Huck. Surviving on their own terms Huck and Jim borrowed vegetables and hunted for meat. We shot a water fowl now and then that got up too early in the morning or didnt go to bed early enough in the evening. Take it all around we lived pretty high. (p.71) Huck is completely satisfied with this life style. He has every thing a free spirit needs; a good companion, enough food and water to comfortably survive, and of course a swift moving river carrying him down the path of life. The huge river is a school for the free spirited. The river is where Huck found out he belongs; there he can be free from societys rules. He can travel along next to the civilized world, stopping and visiting for a while, and then move on before stopping in further down, to get another glimpse of society and learn a little bit more. No one can tell Huck to stay and live in one spot, and no one can tell Huck how to live. In the end, he had become more mature, even though he didnt follow societys traditional standards of the transition from boyhood to manhood. Huck does not graduate from high school or gets his first job, but instead went on an adventure down the Mississippi. This journey gave him a more mature outlook on life that could not be accomplished by sitting in a classroom all day. At the end of his journey, he was faced with having to return to the society he had been free of during his adventure. However, he decided it would be best to leave again, not escaping, but continuing on in life, reaching out for more than what most people settle for. But I reckon I got to light out for the territory ahead of the rest, because Aunt Sally shes going to adopt me and sivilize me, and I cant stand it. I been there before. (p. 287)If Huck were alive today, he most likely would have been put in a reform school, diagnosed as ADD, or punished to the point of rebellion. However, Huck did not have to escape from his responsibilities, he merely freed himself from the world in which he did not belong, into one of movement, change and adventure, where he could take on responsibilities in his own free spirited way. Analysis of Anne Bradstreet’s Poems Paper ENGL2010 February 10, 2013 Analysis of Anne Bradstreet’s Poems Anne Bradstreet’s poem In Reference to Her Children, 23 June 1659 is a poem telling of her love, care, and worries for her children. In Reference to her Children† is both metaphorical and symbolic, expressing everything from pathos to love and a hope for her eternal reward. (www. papermasters. com) The poem is structured with a single stanza with every other line rhyming. The speaker seems to be speaking to a semi- private audience given the intimacy of the poem, and the way it speaks to the children. The tone of this poem is familiar, using the language in an abstract way by being birds; but the language is also concrete, and it is not hard to understand what this mother is trying to say. In lines 1-40, Bradstreet sets up an image of a mother bird and her nest filled with babies: four girls and four boys, representative of a human mother and her children. The speaker seems to be Bradstreet, speaking the poem first as a story about her children, as the tone changes near the end of the poem though it is clear she is writing the poem to her children. Bradstreet uses this poem to express her love and worries for her children as they grow and develop their own lives. The tone of this poem seems to be semi joyful, and familiar in the beginning, of a mother telling about her children being born and nursed with pain and care. In line four, the speaker tells of sparing nothing in order to take care of her young; showing how deep her love is for them. At first it sounds joyful as she speaks of how her young â€Å"Mounted the trees, and learned to sing† (Bradstreet) this line gives the sense of joy that comes with learning, nature and singing. The tone then changes, while the speaker is telling of her oldest bird growing up and taking flight, she becomes very sad because she worries for and misses her son. The speaker tells how most of her young have moved on, telling of their ambitions and circumstances of leaving. She makes it clear in lines 11 and 12 she does not want to let her children go, she needs them to be with her where she can enjoy singing and caring for them. There are five children who have left her home, leaving her with three at home. She expresses worries for the three because they soon will â€Å"take their flight† (Bradstreet). This poem shows a sincere care for the children, wishing them well. The speaker talks of praying for her children and only wanting good to come to their lives. Her thoughts stay steady of her children throughout the whole poem, this poem is the result of the endless love and care she has for her children. After telling of how her children came to spread their wings, the tone turns sad, while acknowledging her natural fears as a mother. She says, â€Å"If birds could weep, then my would my tears†; â€Å"Let others know what are my fears† (lines 41, 42) shows how much she fears for the children’s safety. The speaker begins to imagine a sequence of bad events that could happen to the children. The speaker finds herself overwhelmed with sadness and thoughts of how tenderly she cared for her children. The speaker tells of her raw emotions in line 60, expressing the intense pain her worrying is causing her body; â€Å"My throbs such now as ‘fore were never’. One of the speakers concerns are the ignorance’s of danger, because of this concern line 65 warns her children saying 62, â€Å"to your safety have and eye, so happy may you live and die†. This part of the poem makes it more obvious that she is speaking directly to her children. The poem takes a slight turn in tones, the speaker goes from pure worry and stress about her children to a sense of acceptance. Statement that sticks out in showing acceptance are; â€Å"Meanwhile my days in tunes ill spend Till my weak lays (poems) with me shall end† (lines 67-68); â€Å"In shady woods ill sit and sing, And things that passed to mind ill bring†(69-70). These lines are the first ones in which she really indicated anything of herself and what she will do, without involving the children except by memories. This shows some signs of accepting her children have to do what they will and admitting she will continue to move forward without them in her nest. The speaker goes on to speak of not lamenting her age; this shows she accepts the years that have gone by and has no regrets. The speaker is accepting her age and the fact that her flight is soon to come; but this will be the most important flight, the one to her heaven. After she begins to accept her age and the fact that her children are developing their own lives the poem takes on a sense of contentment. The poem In Reference to Her Children seems to be a sort of therapy for Bradstreet as she goes though the stages of grieving for her children. The poem shows all the different stages of acceptance, during a situation that was started with uncertainty. Bradstreet was one of the first American poets since the movement from England. Like many women writers in the nineteenth century, Bradstreet used print to publicize the supposedly private experiences of a woman. (VanEgen) Bradstreet was heavily criticized for this, being as the puritan view saw women as mothers and wives and nothing more, using her poems for reasons to say she must be a bad mother, puritan or wife because of her time used to write. In reality Bradstreet was good at all of those things finding the time to write after her work as a mother. Bradstreet found a way to find a public voice without violating cultural standards of privacy; she brought attention to the experiences of women and helped to re-envision their place in a society centered on the home (VanEgen). The Data/Information/Knowledge/Wisdom Continuum The Data/Information/Knowledge/Wisdom Continuum Data, information, and knowledge are words used to assign meaning to our complex nursing work. In the field of information technology, these words are used to give meaning and direct the flow of organizational knowledge (Thompson & Warren, 2009). The concept of the data-information-knowledge-wisdom (DIKW) continuum is the transformation of data into wisdom through cognitive processes, which are supportive of the nursing practice.Schleyer and Beaudry (2009) discussed how nurses in this growing specialty are accountable to provide the best evidence-based care advice possible, transform the data collected to information, and apply that knowledge with wisdom to address the patient’s unique needs. The purpose of this paper is to display the progression through the four steps of the data, information, knowledge, wisdom continuum that occurs through research information to answer a clinica l question pertinent to nursing in an acute care setting. Electronic Medication Administration in Acute Care SettingImplementation of the electronic health record, computerized physicians order entry and decision support systems within the health care industry have attributed to a decrease in documentation and transcription errors, while making measurable improvements in our nation’s health care. The clinical research question for this paper is; has implementing the use of the electronic medication administration (eMAR) improved the safety of medication administration in the hospital setting? This technology at present has not been implemented in our hospital organization, but will be in the near future.Poon et al. (2010) explained that serious medication errors are common in hospitals and often occur during the transcription or administration of medication. In order to help prevent such errors, the development of technology has been instituted to verify medications by incorp orating barcode verification technology within an electronic medication-administration system, which is referred to as bar code medication administration (BCMA). Database Resources Ackoff (1989) proposed that data are defined as symbols that represent properties of objects, events and their environment.They are the products of observation, and are of no use until they are in a useable (i. e. relevant) form (as cited in Rowley, 2007). For this paper, the Walden Library Health Science and Nursing Databases were utilized to conduct a search for data related to the clinical question â€Å"has implementing the use of the electronic medication administration (eMAR) improved the safety of medication administration in the hospital setting? † The databases for CINHAL/Medline and PUBMED were queried by using the search words eMAR, bar code technology, medication administration, and safety.The search generated four complete articles in the CINHAL/Medline databases that were pertinent to the topic. Another four sources were generated in the PUBMED database, of which one was a free text article, the other three sources were abstracts; however, two of those sources were successfully retrieved from Google Scholar (find in Walden Library). Although, no full text was available for one of the abstracts found for this source in the search, the information within the abstract was deemed relevant. Transforming Data into InformationInformation is inferred from data (Rowley, 2007). Upon evaluating the plethora of data from said resources, it was determined that a substantial amount of relevant information could be extracted from this accumulation of data to support the clinical question in progress. In other words, said data would be considered information, as it had context to the reason the literature search was being performed. Medication errors cause an estimated 7000 deaths each year and cost the nation $2 billion annually (Paoletti, Suess, Lesko, Feroli, Kennel, Mahler, & Sauders, 2007).A significant reduction of medication errors was evidenced by the use of bar code technology and the eMAR. A study funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (Healthcare Benchmark & Quality Improvements, 2010) reported that by incorporating bar-code verification technology within an eMAR system, a significant reduction in medication errors was demonstrated. Connecting Information to Knowledge According to (Thompson & Warren, 2009) knowledge occurs when we apply the data and information to obtain relevant and purposeful meaning.The transformation of information to knowledge occurs when information is combined so that connections can be identified and formalized if you will. Some methods used to achieve this transformation would be through comparison. How does this information compare to other known data? Example: Were there fewer transcription and medication errors with the use of eMAR and bar code technology as opposed to paper documentation and admin istration? Another method would be through making associations or connections. Example: How does the use of eMAR with bar-code technology relate to reduced transcription and medication errors?There was a significant amount of information gleaned from database resources that supported the conclusion, that implementation of such technology could greatly reduce transcription and medication administration errors, as well as adverse drug events, although it did not propose to eliminate such errors. Wisdom Pertaining to Knowledge Can the use of information technology be utilized to gain wisdom? Achieving wisdom via the application of knowledge to manage and solve human problems is essential for health.Major (2002) discussed how wisdom involves recognizing what is most important, by making distinctions among alternatives. It comprises the application of experience, intelligence, creativity, and knowledge, as mediated by values, toward the achievement of a common good (as cited in Matney et al. 2011). It would be a reasonable assertion that clinicians and researchers may conclude that information and knowledge derived from this data will be accurate and can reliably support research, clinical nursing practice, and nursing decisions. SummaryIn that nurses are knowledge workers, it is only natural that they would require a fundamental knowledge to support their practice and profession. As knowledge workers, nurses collect data and information and make decisions that affect individuals, families, and communities at large. An understanding of how the concepts of the data-information-knowledge-wisdom (DIKW) framework overlap and interact will beneficial for nurses performing research studies. Given that wisdom is supported by knowledge, different manifestations of wisdom may exist.Wisdom may be manifested in nursing through â€Å"professional expertise†(Baltez & Staudinger, 2000) or â€Å"clinical judgment† (Benner, 2000), (as cited in Mateny et al. 2011). History Nightingale vs Seacole Essay

Do you agree with the view that Mary Seacole, and not Florence Nightingale was the real ‘Angel of Mercy’ during the Crimean War I agree totally with the view that Mary Seacole was the real ‘Angel of Mercy’ although I can understand why there may be some evidence suggesting that Nightingale warranted the title. Sources 2C and 2O agree with the view that Nightingale was the ‘Angel of Mercy’ whereas Source V gives evidence that shows Seacole deserved to herald the title.The weight of evidence clearly supports the view seen in Source V saying Seacole was the real ‘Angel of Mercy’ due to the provenance that surrounds the other two sources which support Nightingale. There is a lot of evidence to suggest that Mary Seacole really was the angel of Mercy. This is very clearly supported in Source V which describes her work in comparison to that of Florence Nightingale. Source V, which is an extract from a book called â€Å"The Victorians† written by A. N.Wilson and published in 2002, states how Seacole was very ‘attentive’ and was always ‘on hand for the troops’ so therefore of course showing Seacole in a very good light. The source was produced to show the readers what the modern day revisionist view is in regards to who the real ‘Angel of Mercy’ was and also how the work Nightingale did was minimal and had no positive effect on the soldiers. The author has clearly been well informed and has a strong agenda in wanting to play down the role of Nightingale in the Crimea.When comparing this to Source O, we can clearly see the difference between the Jingoistic and Traditionalist view of Nightingale being almost angelic and even like the Virgin Mary compared to the revisionist view where she is criticised hugely. Source O may have a very different perspective on Nightingale’s role during the Crimean War, however it is still valid as it shows the view point of British peopl e of Nightingale being a hero during Victorian times.Also, Source 2C is a traditionalist view and we now know that many of the things stated within it are false such as the statement that she ‘tended the dying’. Furthermore, Seacole has to be considered as the real Angel of Mercy due to the great efforts she made just to get out to the Crimea in which she had to pay money herself to get there. She was previously turned down a position as a nurse under Nightingale’s leadership, which it is thought, could be to do with the fact she was black.Her heroism was proven further through her setting up the ‘British Hotel’ in Scutari that tended to the troops. As well as giving them provisions when they were in need. In addition, we can clearly see the bravery she possessed from the fact she would minister to the wounded and the dying on the actual battlefield. She was willing to risk her life to save others. Seacole gave an honest recollection within her diari es of the things she did out in the Crimea and gave a description of her everyday life out there, which clearly involved so much hard work.The Times journalist at the time William Howard Russell, who himself was out in the Crimea, backs up the opinion that Mary Seacole was the real ‘Angel of Mercy’, stating how ‘she doctors and cures all manner of men with extraordinary success’ just going to show the extent of the positive impact she had on the troops during the Crimean War. Moreover, Dr Reid, a surgeon in the Army at the time, who states how he met ‘a celebrated person ‘who’ did not spare herself if she could do any good to the suffering soldiers, furthers Russell’s opinion.This once again goes to show the nature of the person she was and the impact she had which is seen in Source O. Therefore, there is strong evidence to suggest that Mary Seacole, and not Florence Nightingale, was in fact the true ‘Angel of Mercy’ d uring the Crimean War. There is also substantial evidence to suggest that Florence Nightingale, and not Mary Seacole was the real ‘Angel of Mercy’ during the Crimean War. To begin with, both Source 2C and Source 2O show a great deal of support towards the view that Nightingale was a hero and was the true ‘Angel of Mercy’.Source 2C states how ‘Florence Nightingale battled as valiantly as any soldier in the field to improve conditions’ giving us an impression as to the extreme effort she put in to helping out the British troops. It states how she worked with ‘incredible energy’ once more showing the amount of work she put in. This can be compared to Source 20 which also portrays Nightingale as being angelic and tending to the men for their every need. We now know that she didn’t actually treat the men herself and instead supervised whilst other nurses did this work. Source 2C was written by Denis Judd and is an extract from th e 1975 book â€Å"The Crimean War†.Judd clearly had an agenda to portray Nightingale well and perhaps hadn’t got the benefit of receiving all the evidence necessary to produce a completely truthful representation. It does however give us a perspective into the opinions people held until about ten years ago. Furthermore, there is a huge amount of evidence to suggest that Nightingale was in fact ineffective and perhaps even had a negative effect on the soldiers in The Crimea. This can clearly be seen due to the death rate rising to 42 per 1000 during her time at the Scutari between November 1854 and March 1855.This is clearly down no the filthy conditions that the hospital managed to get into whilst she was there with the floors being covered in muck and â€Å"crawling with vermin† which obviously led to many diseases such as gangrene and in particular cholera. Cholera was the disease that resulted in the most deaths. Before Nightingale arrived, we know that the c onditions were much better and were described as ‘sufficiently comfortable’ and ‘clean and airy’, but this changed and rapidly declined following Nightingale’s arrival thus meaning she cannot be considered as being the ‘Angel of Mercy’.This view is furthered from the fact that following the arrival of sanitary commission, the conditions changed for the better and the death rate went down to 2 per 1000. In addition Nightingale was very arrogant and jealous of anyone who competed with her and even accused Mary Stanley of ‘plotting to set up an opposition’, which never would have happened, had Nightingale not have turned down her help. This once again shows how she was not the hero that Victorian society thought she was as seen in Source 2C and Source 2O. Thus, there is some evidence to suggest that Florence Nightingale was the ‘Angel of Mercy’ and not Mary Seacole.However that evidence is very weak in comparison t o the evidence suggesting that Seacole warranted the title of ‘Angel of Mercy’. To conclude, Mary Seacole and not Florence Nightingale was the real ‘Angel of Mercy’ due to a number of reasons addressed. In Sources 2C and 2O, although they describe and show Nightingale being angelic and having a huge impact on the soldiers lives positively, they can’t be seen as true because they were written at a time where Nightingale was seen as a hero and people held a much more traditionalist view.This differs to Source V which is a revisionist view and was written by an author who was well informed in comparison to the ill-informed Dennis Judd and the artist who painted Source O. Overall, it is very clear that the evidence for Mary Seacole being the true ‘Angel of Mercy’ far outweighs that of Florence Nightingale deserving the name so therefore in my opinion Mary Seacole was the true ‘Angel of Mercy’. The privatization of prisons in America impacts the treatment of prisoners in a negative way. In 2008, there were 1,610,446 people imprisoned in the United States, Seven percent of those are in private prisons. It may seem like a small number, but inmate numbers are rising along with number of private prisons. Many people, since the early 1990s, when the privatization of prisons became popular, have had concerns that these companies would be more worried about profit than the prisoners human rights. Since then, private prisons have only increased in popularity. The original reason private prisons exist are cash strapped states were looking for an alternative to state and federal facilities to incarcerate inmates affordably. It is now a 5 billion industry. Many states pay millions of dollars each year to the private companies. Colorado has the largest number of private prisons in the country. â€Å"The state had not saved money by contracting out minimum security beds, and that more money is actually spent on private medium security beds than would be spent in a publicly operated institution.† (Mason) This study, performed in 2010 in Arizona, showed that they were not saving and were actually spending more money on the private facility than the public. The U.S. General Accounting Office, in 1996, went over five different research studies and came to the conclusion that there was no real evidence that prisons for profit saved the government and the general public money.
